Building a vibrant community facility

​

Brierley Hill Civic has welcomed artists, performers, and theatre productions since the 1960s, standing proudly at the heart of our community. In recent years, however, its usage had fallen while costs remained the same or increased. The hall was frequently closed during the day, meaning it was not fulfilling its potential as a vibrant hub of diverse activities.

Rejuvenating the Civic

In February 2015, Dudley Council gave Dudley CVS the opportunity to rejuvenate Brierley Hill Civic Hall on an 18-month trial. This aligned with Dudley MBC’s goal of becoming a ‘community council’—one that enables and supports communities to do things for themselves, rather than acting as a body that does things to or for them.

During the trial, the Civic underwent an extraordinary transformation, evolving from an underused and deteriorating venue into an award-nominated, five-star rated entertainment centre offering a diverse range of events to suit every taste and budget.

Dudley CVS, Dudley MBC, and the local community were delighted with the outcome of the trial. As a result, the Civic underwent an asset transfer process so that Dudley CVS could take over its management on a permanent basis. This transfer was completed in March 2020, unfortunately coinciding with the first COVID-19 lockdown.

The past two years have been challenging to navigate, but now that the immediate effects of COVID-19 appear to have passed, we are once again rebuilding the Civic’s momentum. The continued support of local people will be crucial to its ongoing success.​​
